In a day where the science vs. religion debate is dominated by belligerent provocateurs and single-minded religionists, Andrew White's century-old "History" is refreshing in its civility and thoughtfulness. The tone is friendly to both scientific and religious perspectives, though it's clear from the outset that White is clearly in the academic/scientific camp. His core thesis, that the advancements of science ennoble religion because they "illuminate truth", is wishy-washy at best, but he has assembled an impressive history of the development of Christian and scientific thought in attempting to prove it. Particularly impressive is his discussion of emergent Christian "traditions" - extrabiblical interpolations by early Christian thinkers, that have been repeated so often that they have wrongfully taken their place amidst core biblical 'truths'. And though the state of 'science' and 'Christianity' are over a century out-of-date, the underlying animus between the two remains fundamentally the same today as in White's time. I am publishing the same review for History of the Warfare of Science with Theology (White) as for History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science (Draper) as both books came out of the same sphere of thought. They are both deeply flawed, and, in reading the other reviews, the fact that these books are both propaganda needs to be acknowledged. While there is much interesting, solid facts in both books, these facts are cleverly used in such a way as to make the propaganda seem legitimate literally promoting and constructing a hateful artificial conflict, a 'war.' Crucial to the arguments in both books is the fabricated scenario that everyone prior to Christopher Columbus believed the Earth to be flat. I would ask the reader to refer to Inventing the Flat Earth Columbus and the Historians by Jeffrey Burton Russell. The common belief since 500 year before Christ was that the Earth was a sphere and was never held differently by any reputable person. The Christian 'saints' referred to in both arguments are all lesser figures, never notable in their day, and were often castigated for their outrageous beliefs by other Christians. They were only resurrected by these authors to build a case against the Church and invent a false scenario that religion and science were at war with each other. The fact is, what we know and call science is a relatively new phenomena, being called Natural Philosophy prior. The Church historically had a strong conviction to Aristotelian reason, and it was out of this conviction that modern science was born. One only need to check their history books to find the truth of this Lemaitre (Big Bang), Newton (modern physics), Copernicus (solar centricity), Mendel (genetics) were all ordained Christian clerics. The modern reader should be aware that both the Flat Earth scenario and the Galileo controversy were largely made-up histories (I would also refer the reader to Galileo Heretic (Redondi) for the factual details of the trial). It is appalling that in our modern era that so much of our accepted facts and conventional wisdom is still based on purposeful misrepresentations that have long been debunked. While I believe both books should remain available to the public as reference, it should STRONGLY be noted the intolerance they were designed to promote and should be likened to other racist books of our era that we as a civil society would have no trouble putting in their proper perspective.
The author did a lot of research on the subject. It is very detailed and the arguments are substanciated by tons of references.
The hypocrisy of men of the church is fully exposed. There were many facts I did not know making this book a good read.
The writing style is a little heavy for today's audience but it is very readable.
It takes a bit to get comfortable with a 19th century style but well worth it. He puts most contemporary so called scholars to shame by clearly pointing out the use of historical linguistics in the framework of what was intended meaning at the time versus short sighted assumptions of contemporary meaning.
The enlightenment of how the bible stories came to be. Interesting that so many people were treated so wretchedly over ancient tribal beliefs.
This book certainly could have been more than it was, but had many truths contained within many more rationalizations to accommodate science. We should be careful about isolating ourselves in either the science or religion camps. Both contain much of worth.
I prefer a more direct writing style, but then I am not the audience he was writing to at the time. This book is filled with a great array of citiations to source material in the span of various scientific endevors that religion has opposed. I have also read a book that is counterpoint to this book, The Popes and science.
White covers a lot of ground, and does not pull punches when it comes to religion working counter to progress.
He also takes on the appologists who made excuses for many actions, in particular the treatment of Galileo.
