Man's best friend.
Rick is like many Americans. He's concerned with what he sees on the news, and how the country seems to be ready to tear itself apart. His biggest concern has been civil unrest. Already an avid camper, he sets out to secure his future, and career, by finding his own Eden.
Tina is a small-business owner and knows what she wants in life. She and her furry companion find themselves at gunpoint when Rick walks back into her world and forever changes the dynamic between them.
One dog, who's been the savior, protector, and companion...Opus. The owner of two humans that mostly understand him. Mostly.
When the police walk into an ambush, a series of events forces the couple to bug out. The problem with having to leave for a small town, at a remote location, is it really isn't a secret. Small towns bring their own problems with crime, and power plays. Everybody knows everybody, and the gossip mill runs as fast as lightning.
Will the trio be as prepared as they need to be?
One Man Opus A Survival and Preparedness Story (Audible Audio Edition) Boyd Craven III Kevin Pierce Books
One Man's Opus is a prepper/survival story that pretty much lacks the macho BS, but accurately reflects real life.Rick is a writer of women's paranormal romance books because they pay better than other genres. Tina owns a storage facility she inherited from her parents. Opus is Tina's personal protection dog. A German Shepherd who keeps her safe and pretty much owns Tina and Rick.
Their story of meeting and falling in love while Rick makes his own bug out site and prepper base is the basis for this unusual book. This tale is very engaging and quite fun to read. There is some danger and friction between Rick and a couple of local hotheads. Also a fast friendship between Rick, Tina and Rick's closest neighbors, Sarge and Annette. The writing style is very satisfying and told in the first-person voice. Editing is very good and character development is top notch.
This is a nice stand-alone novel that has a good ending, even if it isn't a real surprise. The only reason for my four star rating is because of the advertisements that are interwoven with the story. Amazon is mentioned in connection with Rick's purchases. All the items he buys are really on amazon if you care to look. Rick buys bulk foods from a company that actually is in business.
While these are worked into the story quite well, it still seemed like a shameless commercial plug. However, if you were prepping yourself, the author is giving a bit of assistance in the form of recommendations. No harm in that, I guess.
Goid story, great characters and a fantastic dog. What more could you ask for?

One Man Opus A Survival and Preparedness Story (Audible Audio Edition) Boyd Craven III Kevin Pierce Books Reviews
This book is written in first-person, which usually means it takes me a while to get into it, but my interest was caught immediately. The writing is so smooth it is easy to feel like you are wrapped up in Rick Carpenter’s thoughts, which, of course, you are, but this story did an excellent job of inserting the reader into his internal workings. Rick thinks of himself as an introvert, but I think of him as someone who just needs to find the right people.
Rick shares a dinky apartment with Al, who likes to say ‘Dude’ a lot, along with other slang. It’s an interesting relationship, since Al is always ready to party and Rick is not into anything that involves social interaction. He likes to camp alone in the wilderness – very alone – where he will never run into other people. Using his solo time to good effect, Rick has become a writer. It used to be articles for websites and blogs, and the occasional science fiction for . One drunken night, Al dares him to write something outside his usual genre. Rick insists Al pick the category and, wouldn’t you know it, Rick is now a paranormal romance author. He’s amazed and somewhat embarrassed that he actually makes a living doing romances.
He gets along very well with Al’s family and is glad to take his jumper cables over to Al’s dad’s home to jump-start an old RV. Before he knows it, Rick is the proud owner of said old RV. Now what? Well, finding a place to park it is first. Al’s ex-girlfriend, Tina, who owns a mini storage, knows Rick in passing and it sounds like what she has is just what he needs. So, he has a place to fix up his home on wheels and discovers Tina has no problem helping make it road ready. Once it is good to go, he decides on the perfect ‘alone’ spot to move his RV to and write. Unfortunately, the small town he chooses has a big bias against anyone who might move a trailer park into their area. Since Rick has a large gravelled area for his RV, citizens have gotten the wrong idea, and he finds himself explaining that he has no intention of running a trailer park. Some people don’t care, they’ve decided they just don’t like him, or his RV, or the shed he built for storage. The inspector who is sent to approve everything insists that Rick is trying to sneak in a trailer park and tries to refuse his improvements. Fortunately, there are some people who take a liking to him and help him settle in. That is not the end of troublesome neighbors, so be prepared for plenty of action.
The narrative is interesting with a lot of Rick’s opinions, and his sudden decision to become a prepper and what it would entail. Ultimately, it involved buying groceries in bulk and never actually got into how preppers live. Rick and Tina have a sweet romance, but once he began to dwell on how beautiful and perfect she is, I began to doubt how anyone could be quite that wonderful. There are some fun characters and I did really enjoy those, but they also were near perfect. I happen to enjoy stories that end happily, I just don’t care for flawless characters. Everyone will have to decide for themselves what they think of this book. I enjoyed it enough to keep reading and many others will also.

I really enjoyed reading this book! The characters were very interesting. I especially liked the dog. He really is one of the main characters and provides much comic relief. I very rarely buy a book, but I bought this one even though I had already read it on Kendal unlimited. I wanted to keep it for my personal library. That should let you know how much I enjoyed the story. Take a chance. Hopefully you will like it too!
I couldn't put this down. Read it from start to finish in a few short hours. I fell in love with all of the characters, and double for the furry missile.
Enjoyed it so much, that I went back in my library and re-read the Scorched Earth, and The World Burns series. Searching now for the next addiction to Mr. Cravens writing.
Forward I have read the World Burns series three times, One Man's Opus now four times, just finished Blackout where I met Raider, an Opus clone. Today I discovered that there is another Opus book. . . see ya later.
Boyd Craven introduced me to dystopian SHTF fiction and this short novel helps me to understand the genius of his other writing. He is without peer in this genre in my humble opinion and continues to entertain wonderfully. I encourage all who read this to enjoy his many other works.
The characters in this book are so delightful to read and get to know. Very nice writing style. Thank you, for an for a nice days reading, Kelly
