Link Hayward (K Company, Conroy's First Command) is a mean SOB who's been busted in rank more times than he can count. He's also the guy you want next to you when things go bad. While carrying dispatches, Link meets Prudence Wainwright, a pious Eastern woman whose husband has been murdered and whose daughter has been kidnapped by a gang of renegade Jayhawkers. Teaming up reluctantly, Link and Prudence must cross hundreds of miles of hostile territory and recapture Hope before her kidnappers sell her to the Comancheros and she is lost to them forever.

For some reason I always forget how much I like Robert Broomall's books, so I bypassed this one 10 times in my daily look at newly published westerns. To make up for my stupidity and reinforce my memory I decided to write a review.Link and Pru are an unlikely pair who meet in a thunderstorm when Link pushes his way into her wagon where she is stranded and alone, waiting for her husband and 14 year-old daughter to return with their runaway stock. Link breaks the news that her husband is dead and there's no sign of her daughter Hope.
This is the beginning of their long and difficult journey to find and rescue Hope. I was on the edge of my seat through many scenes in the book and barely kept myself from skipping to the end to find out if they made it out alive. All the characters were very real to me and I traveled along with them sharing in their fear and pain from hunger, thirst, blisters and chafed skin to arrow and gunshot wounds.
I highly recommend this to anyone that loves action and adventure books. The fact that it's a western is a plus for me but shouldn't keep you from enjoying it even if you are not a fan of the genre.

The Dispatch Rider K Company Book 3 edition by Robert Broomall Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
THE DISPATCH RIDER IS A SUPER WESTERN BOOK. IT HAS A GOOD STORYLINE AND MR. BROOMALL STICKS TO THAT STORYLINE. THE PLOT IS GOOD AND THE CHARACTERS ARE WELL DEVELOPED. IT IS NOT,IN MY OPENION, A REGULAR "SHOOT-UM-UP" WESTERN, BUT THERE IS PLENTY OF ACTION. IT IS THE KIND OF BOOK THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO PUT DOWN, UNTIL YOU FINISH READING IT. THIS IS MY FIRST BOOK THAT I'VE READ BY MR. BROOMALL, BUT, IT WON'T BE THE LAST. MR. BROOMALL, "KEEP ON KEEPING ON".
Very entertaining, well written story with action, adventure, and romance. This book was historically accurate in terms of weapons, dress, culture, and geography- obviously well researched.
Excellent western- good to find an author who seems to know about his subject, isn't calling mares 'him', or 'reigning' them, & writes well . There are a few twists, steady action & a good story. Characters facing hard times, the kinds of times there once really were, doing what they had to do.. made me want to read more by this author.
This has been one of the best westerns I’ve read - and I’ve read a lot of them!
The story line easily carried me from page to page. I found myself very involved in the story. Character development was very good - I felt like I knew all of them. The book was clearly edited very well.
There is plenty of action, villains and old west fixtures. The landscape of western Kansas, northern Texas and eastern New Mexico of the time period is well researched and accurately described. But what captured me the most is the excellent character development, particularly with the evolution of the naive and super-conservative heroine. Her metamorphosis is accomplished gradually as circumstances (for which she is totally unprepared) change her perspectives. Even though this appeared to be the end of a trilogy involving Link Hayward, I enjoyed the development of the relationship between he and Prudence such that I would like to see the author follow up on their future endeavors.
This is a full western story with a lot of characters, action, suspense - and at it's base, a love story. It's well-written with detailed character descriptions and action sequences. I'd rate it 'R' due to some strong adult language here and there.
Not one to easily give a five star rating, I was very impressed by the book. I think what impressed me the most was that Broomhall had the optimal amount of description of the tough area they were traversing, without going on ad nauseum, yet did not forget the tale he was weaving. The description of Kansas was very accurate in my estimation - it's tough, but beautiful in its own rite. The plot was very well developed and held my attention throughout. Character development was spot on and complete enough to help me develop a mind's eye picture of each character's personal appearance. In many ways this is a very 'rough and tumble' story, but the author provided enough tender moments to help the reader recover from the raw parts of the novel.
One topic that is implicit in the novel is the difficulty that Americans who lived in the calm of the East had in adjusting to the lifestyle of the West. Many families made it as far as Kansas only to realize that they were not up to the harshness of the West and fled back to Pennsylvania or Virginia or wherever. It wasn't until the railroads were more developed and the Eastern Europeans arrived that the western states began to thrive.
I recommend this to anyone, but especially those familiar with the Kansas landscape and the Indians and Cavalry in Kansas during the nineteenth Century.
Well done, Mr. Broomall!!
